Local and General Scholarships




Thousands of scholarships exist to help students pay for their college education. Take the time to research and apply for scholarships. Below are some websites to help get you started.

Annual HCC/AMN Healthcare Scholarship Essay Contest (Due April 1, 2011)
In conjunction with AMN Healthcare, the title sponsor of this year's Finest Awards, HCC is pleased to invite you to participate in the 8th Annual HCC/AMN Scholarship Essay ContestHigh school seniors and college students currently enrolled in a San Diego County school who plan to enter the field of health care upon graduation are invited to enter the contest for the opportunity to win a $1,500 scholarship. The winner will also be recognized in front of many of the San Diego health care industry's leading communications professionals at the Finest Awards on April 21, 2011.
 HCC and AMN Healthcare are proud to provide one deserving student with the opportunity to begin their academic journey toward becoming a leader in health care. AMN Healthcare is the largest health care staffing company in the United States. AMN recruits healthcare professionals both nationally and internationally and places them on variable lengths of assignments.

Chargers Champions
The San Diego Chargers are sponsoring a San Diego County initiative benefiting youth and education. The primary focus of "Chargers Champions" is to identify and honor those "Making the Difference" in their communities and in people's lives.


Great Friends Foundation Scholarship
Honoring high school senior(s) of active duty or retired Marine or Navy personnel of the United States of America residing in San Diego County who have excelled in leadership, academics and sportsmanship. To assist students who are immediate family members of Military personnel who excel in leadership, academics and sportsmanship in our communities.  To provide awareness and outreach to the military community of San Diego County.

Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities Scholarships (Due June 10, 2011)
Each scholarship has specific criteria, so please review each one carefully.

Jonathan Tarr Foundation
The Jonathan Tarr Foundation provides college scholarships and leadership opportunities to students from continuation, charter, independent and secondary high schools offering alternative education curriculum, including the AVID program. 75% of recipients are Pacific Islander in honor of the late Jonathan Tarr.

Ron Brown Scholarship Program 
The Ron Brown Scholar Program is a national program that awards scholarships to academically talented, highly motivated African American high school seniors who intend to pursue undergraduate degrees full-time.

The San Diego County Office of Education provides a comprehensive list of a variety of local scholarships.


San Diego Foundation 
The Common Scholarship Application allows you to apply for several different scholarships using one application and submitting one set of application materials. All Common Scholarships require an application, a two-page personal statement, two letters of recommendation on official letterhead, official transcripts in a sealed envelope, and a copy of tax forms filed from the previous year. Some scholarships require additional materials, such as an essay, or forms verifying residency. Please review the criteria for each scholarship for specific information. More than 85 scholarships are offered through the Common Application. Scholarship awards range from $500 to $15,000, with an average award of $2,500. Most scholarships are specific to tuition, books and fees, though some include room and board. The San Diego Foundation’s Common Scholarship Application is available annually in late November. San Diego Indian American Society Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Scholarship
The San Diego Indian American Society will award a minimum of ten Mahatma Gandhi Memorial scholarships to San Diego county high school graduates. They will be honored with a Congressional Certificate of Achievement and cash awards. The SDIA Society has decided to offer scholarship awards of over $30,000 for this annual competition. The award ceremony is to be organized each summer. It will feature talks by selected award winners and invited dignitaries. To be considered for this scholarship, the graduating seniors must have a grade point average of at least 3.8. The selection is open to all irrespective of his or her national origin.

San Diego International Sports Foundation
Established in 1999 by Ron Fowler, founding Chairman of the San Diego International Sports Foundation, Brad Fowler Memorial Scholarship Fund offers a one-year, $5,000 scholarship to high school seniors in San Diego County each year. The recipients must have demonstrated his or her ability to overcome personal obstacles associated with drugs or alcohol, a strong commitment to athletics and continuing their personal growth and development through higher education.


Other Scholarship Resources
Cal Award Achievement Program gives students, who have earned their admission to UC Berkeley but cannot afford to attend, the opportunity to still go to the university through scholarship funding and support services.

College Answer offers step-by-step information for students about the process of applying to college and how to finance it, as well as rich resources for high school counselors and parents.

Dell Scholars Program enables more underserved students with financial need to achieve their greatest potential through higher education.

Gates Millennium Scholars (GMS), funded by a grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, was established in 1999 to provide outstanding low income African American, American Indian/Alaska Natives, Asian Pacific Islander American*, and Hispanic American students with an opportunity to complete an undergraduate college education in any discipline area of interest.


Hispanic Scholarship Fund 
The Hispanic Scholarship Fund (HSF) is the nation's leading organization supporting Hispanic higher education.

NASA's Motivating Undergraduates in Science and Technology Program (MUST) 
The MUST program is for US citizens from an underrepresented group (Women, African Americans, Hispanic Americans, Native Americans, and persons with disabilities)
